The okcCoCo is moving to a new location in Midtown. The new okcCoCo will include many more offices, more coworking space, more social/event space, a gym, bicycle storage, coffee/sandwich shop, outdoor seating, and much more parking.

They cannot do this without your support right now. They have launched a one week funds drive today to raise $25,000. If they cannot reach that goal, the okcCoCo will close in March and we will have to meet elsewhere.

The January meeting is less than a week away. Phil is presenting on cocos2d and Steve has tickets for 360|MacDev to give away. You don’t want to miss it!

The cocos2d presentation will be a bit of a code-a-long. Prior to coming to the meeting you should download and install the cocos2d framework. You’ll find a tarball at the cocos2d downloads page. You’ll need Xcode as well if you don’t already have it.

Cocos2d templates
You will also want to install the cocos2d templates. It’s a snap. Open up the Terminal and cd to your new Cocos2D folder. If you’re not familiar with the cd command, just type “cd ” into the terminal, with the trailing space, and drag the Cocos2D folder into the window. It will fill out the path. Type return.

Once inside that folder, cd into the cocos2d-iphone subfolder: type “cd cocos2d-iphone” and press return. Then run the install script with “sudo ./install-templates.sh”. Enter your password when prompted.

Learning Cocos2D
The presentation will cover just the basics of cocos2d on iOS, to whet your appetite. It will be based on the Space Viking tutorials from the excellent book, Learning Cocos2D. Feel free to have a gander at the site and even download a few of the tutorials. Cocos2D is a comprehensive framework, with a lot going on, and the book and tutorials are a fantastic, hands on guide to developing a complete game.

Recap
Last week Phil gave a Mac presentation on Search Kit and his open source Objective-C wrapper for it, SPSearchStore. The presentation differentiated Search Kit from related technologies such as Spotlight and NSPredicate and then focused on fundamental search index concepts. The presentation ended with sample SPSearchStore code.

Steve discussed handing over the reigns to another member. We debated moving the meeting night to Thursday from Tuesday or possibly changing the meeting format to ease the burden on the group leader. Part of the difficulty is preparing a monthly presentation in case no other member is able to. We considered focusing more on NSCoder shared coding nights instead.

Upcoming: Cocos2d
Phil volunteered to give next month’s presentation on cocos2d, a 2d gaming library for the iPhone. Cocos2d is used in some of the most popular iPhone games and in hundreds of others.

Phil envisions a code-along type meeting. Instead of just presenting on cocos2d, Phil intends to prepare a simple Xcode tutorial covering basic 2d gaming. The presentation will then lead the group through the tutorial, demonstrating the basics of the cocos2d library.

It’s recommended that folks planning to attend the meeting install the cocos2d libraries. You can download cocos2d and read more about this amazing framework at http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/

A summary of the Sept 9th OKC Cocoaheads meeting, for posterity!

Derek spoke about the upcoming Mobile Beta. Taking a cue from Open Beta, developers are invited to come and set up demo tables for their mobile applications. A cozy evening is planned. No presentations, just lots of app demos. There will be food and drink. Mobile Beta is taking place 7pm Thur, Sept 29 at the OKC Coco space.

More info: http://mobilebeta.extendedbeta.com/
OKC Coco: http://okccoco.com/

Eric mentioned his new PigeonMe app for inviting people to locations and sharing directions via maps with live updates. Learn more at the App Store.

There was discussion about setting up an NSCoder night. We’re thinking an informal get together someplace with beer and coffee where we can code the night away in company. Thinking of an October date. Feel free to suggest possible favorite locales.

We’re looking for an October presenter. If you have something you’d like to talk about, let Steve @stevebaranski know or pop off a message to @cocoaokc. We’re also going to see about setting up a presentations form on the site.

Finally, the day’s featured presentation was given by Billy on [redacted], a new feature for designing interfaces in iOS 5. Unfortunately we can’t go into details on the net due to NDA agreements, but if you’d like to know more check out the WWDC presentation, the docs or send Billy a message @smartgoat.
